Historical noteLoyal Till Death: Indians and the North West Rebellion was co-authored with Professor Blair Stonechild, head of Indigenous Studies at the First Nations University of Canada. The book was praised for its sensitivity in telling the stories of Indians during this turbulent time. It won a 1997 Saskatchewan Book Award for First Peoples Publishing and was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for non-fiction.
Scope and contentThe file contains correspodence, articles and book covers compiled by Dr. Waiser during the research and writing of "Loyal Till Death:Indians and the Northwest Rebellion" (1997). The documents include: a letter from Gilbert and Joy Epp of Abbotsford, British Columbia to Blair Stonechild (cc Bill Waiser) regarding "Loyal Till Death" and their own family's connection to some of the history therein; a short biography of Captain John Morgan of the Prince Albert Volunteers who was the first white casualty at Duck Lake (including a photo); a copy of a piece of correspondence from A.E. Forget regarding the dissolution of the Stony Knoll or Young Chippewayan Reserve and proclaiming that it "be thrown open for settlement"; a copy of a document entitled "Extract from a Report of the Committee of the Honorable the Privy Council, approved by his Excellency on teh 11 May, 1897" by G. LaMoth discussing the surrender of the Young Chippewyan or Stoney Knoll Reserve (no. 107); a copy of a document from the Township of Arran, Ontario listing John Morton as a resident; a twelve page project proposal discussing the rationale and methodology for the creation of "Loyal till Death"; a copy of an article entitled "Department of History: Extracts from Professor Morton's Report" from the University of Saskatchwean Archives (Pres Rep 1926-27); three copies of a photograph of participants from a play about the 1885 uprising performed at the University of Saskatchewan on February 23, 1927 (A-2944); a copy of an article from the Saskatoon Star Phoenix entitled "Academics debate accuracy of Indian oral history" (Nov 1, 1993) in which Blair Stonechild and Bill Waiser argue for the merits of oral history as a source, while Tom Flanagan disparages its' validity; a copy of correspondence between Bill Peterson of the Saskatoon Free Press to Fraser Seely of Fifth House Publishers discussing the importance and of "Loyal Till Death" (Feb. 19, 1997); a copy of correspondence from Fraser Seely to Rudy Platiel of the Globe and Mail summarizing the contents and discussing the importance of "Loyal Till Death" (Feb. 12, 1997); a copy of a piece of correspondence from Gary Friesen to Bill Waiser discussing the contents of a draft of "Loyal Till Death" (Oct. 23, 1996); a copy of a legal paper outlining the copyright responsibilities of reviewer Carloyn Whitstone with regard to a manuscript copy of "Loyal Till Death" (July 3, 1996); a copy of a piece of correspondence from Fraser Seely to Professor Waiser regarding a draft copy of "Loyal Till Death" (Dec. 30, 1996); a copy of a piece of correspondence from Fraser Seely to Bill Waiser discussing the acceptance of "Loyal Till Death" for publication by Fifth House Publishers (May 7, 1996); a copy of a letter from W.
