General:

This site enables use of either standard keyword/phrase searches, or faceted searching (or guided navigation). Researchers are strongly encouraged to use both: each type of search complements rather than duplicates the other and each will locate unique results.

To do a standard search, use the search box on the right side.

  • a simple keyword search will search title, historical note, content description, subjects, and names;
  • to search for a phrase or adjacent words, use quotation marks: eg. "Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations"

Faceted searching enables searches based on known results. The specific options available, and number of records for each of these options, will always be displayed based on each search. The initial search screen provides all options within each facet; as each search term is selected, the results will reflect all remaining results within each facet. The terms selected will limit the search; these are displayed above the search results. Click on the "x" to remove any term; or on "start over" to go back to the initial full search options.

Repository:

You may search by a single institution – if you do so, the subsequent search page will reflect only what is available within that institution – or you may choose to search through all institutions concurrently.

Type:

Material on this site has been categorized into one of four general types of material: archival (unique or rare items); published (books or materials commonly available in libraries); museum (artifacts); and theses (limited to University of Saskatchewan MA and PhD theses).

You may choose one of these broad types immediately – if you do so, the subsequent search page will reflect only what is available within this "type" of material – or you may choose to search through all types of material concurrently.

Document Type:

In some instances, textual records can be searched by broad categories: diaries, correspondence, etc. Because archival files most often contain a variety of document types, not all materials will be found using this search.

Researchers may also use this facet to select photographs, moving image, and audio materials.

Date Range:

This search enables selection of materials based on broad date ranges. Specific dates of documents will also be found as part of the descriptive record.

Subjects:

Subject terms are more often broadly, rather than narrowly, based; for specific terms it may be useful to try a keyword search.

Name:

The personal or corporate names of individuals or organizations. All names included will reflect a direct connection to the record(s) cited: they may be authors or recipients of a document; mentioned within the document; identified in a photograph, etc. Personal names have been entered last name, first name.

Researchers should be advised that this list is not exhaustive.

Cultural Regions:

This search will limit results to materials created within, or relating to, specific cultural areas of North America. "Canada – National" reflects more than one cultural region within Canada; "International" reflects more than one cultural region within North America, or countries external to the continent.

Treaty Boundaries:

This search will limit results to materials created or occurring within the boundaries of treaties negotiated with Canada. "No treaty" means no formal treaty covering the area was entered into; "No data" means no information concerning treaty boundaries was entered into the descriptive record.

Specialized Searches:

Searches may also be limited by provenance, geographic location, or language of material. To find records created by an individual or organization, search the provenance field. Geographic location includes former as well as current place names. Although the majority of the materials described are in English, language of material enables searching for material written or spoken in other languages.
