Scope and contentThe file contains a presentation by the Honourable Richard Nerysoo, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, Government of the Northwest Territories. Nerysoo discusses the history of education in the Territories, the philosophy behind the current system, the role of Elders in community schools, the Department's development of Dene Ked: a Dene culture and language curriculum, the Department's development of Inuuqatgiit: an Inuktitut curriculum, general curricula informationw with relevance to Aboriginal people and cultivating cross-cultural understanding, official languages and language curricula, the Eastern Arctic Teacher Education Program, the Keewatin Teacher Education Program, job skills training, social problems and their relationship to educational attainment, the recognition of the Dogrib Teacher Education Program by UNESCO, and general educational concerns in the Territories. Following the presentation Commissioners Erasmus and Chartrand discuss some of the issues raised with Nerysoo.
