Scope and contentFile contains a presentation by Vernon Roote, Deputy Grand Chief of the Union of Ontario Indians. Roote's presentation topic if "Building a Nation" and he discusses "the big topic of nationhood and sovereignty." Roote highlights some of the opinions gathered from a conference the past August held in Garden River, Ontario from the viewpoints of "the political people right down to the grassroots people" concerned with the topic of Anishnabek nationhood. Root discusses nationhood as it pertains to soveriegnty; language and culture; medicine; education; history; self-governance; decolonization and liberation; standards of law; lands, resources, treaties, and new treaties; hunting and fishing rights; and relations with non-Aboriginal Canadians. Following the presentation Commissioner Wilson discusses some self-governance issues with Root. Following this Chief Beaucage makes some remarks thanking Chief Root for traveling to the community to make his presentation, and thanking the other participants in the Commission.
