Scope and contentFile contains a presentation by Chief Bernard Meneen, Narcisse Moberly, Chief Johnson Sewegaham, Francis Meneen, Gabe Meneen, Cliff Kazony, and Harold Cardinal, High Level Tribal Council. The file consists of two formal presentations by the Tribal Council and a dialogue between the representatives and the assembled Commissioners. Johnson Sewepegaham presents on behalf of the Tallcree and Little Red River Cree First Nations. Sewepegaham emphasizes the importance of Treaty Eight to these Cree peoples, and that history shows that the Crown has consistently disregarded it and worked to undermine their rights and interests. He stresses the need for nation-to-nation dialogue to address the issues facing the Cree, and gives a brief overview of Treaty history and some of the most important components of Treaty Eight as he sees them. Bernard Meenen presents on Treaty 8 itself, emphasizing its geographic size and the wealth of resources found within its borders. Meenen stresses the urgent need to address problems in the Treaty relationship. Harold Cardinal self-governance as it applies to Treaties. Following these presentations Commissioners Dussault and Robinson respond to them and discuss Treaty and self-governance issues with reference to the Commission and its mandate. Following this is a discussion between the Commissioners and Tribal Council officials on Treaty's meaning, the Metis people and their bilateral agreement with Alberta, what is going on in other provinces (Saskatchewan, Ontario) with relation to Treaty recognition and education, and related concerns. Following this Barb Beaulieu performs a closing prayer to end the Commissions sitting for the day.
