Scope and contentFile contains a presentation by Thelma Chalifoux, Senator Co-Chair, Metis Nation of Alberta. Chalifoux discusses the institution of the Metis Senate in Alberta. Chalifoux gives an overview of its composition and goals, and relates how it draws its inspiration from the Senate of the Metis provisional government of Red River in 1870. She then goes on to discuss two areas the Senate is working at addressing currently: entering talks with the RCMP regarding teaching Metis prisoners about their culture and identity, and relations with the Child Welfare Department of Alberta Social Services with regard to Metis children's issues. Chalifoux concludes by asking that the Commission recognizes the need for seperate agreements with the Metis so that they "can take their rightful place within the Canadian mosaic. These agreements would not need additional budget allocations but only a re-allocation of existing dollars."
