Historical noteAfter 1810 the rivalry between the North West Company and Hudson's Bay Company grew in intensity and became a problem for the British government. The conflict over the Red River Settlement led to virtual warfare between the companies, and the final solution was the union of the two companies in 1821. The name of the older company remained.
Scope and contentCopies of transcripts of communications between Sir Alexander Mackenzie and Lord Selkirk pertaining to the latter's buying Hudson's Bay Company stock and acquiring control of the Company. Later communications pertain to an attempt to compose the differences between the two companies which had resulted in the death of the Northwester Aeneas Macdonell at Eagle Lake, east of Lake of the Woods. This correspondence passed among McTavish, Fraser and Company, Inglis, Ellice and Company, Sir Alexander Mackenzie and the Governor and Committee of the Hudson's Bay Company. Includes a list of partners in the North West Company and Justices of the Peace in the "Indian Territory", and Mackenzie's personal observations of each man.
