2007: Engage, Enlighten, Explore
On April 3, 2007, the University of Saskatchewan celebrated 100 years as an institution. It was on this day in 1907 that the University Act received Royal Assent. Centennial celebrations officially started on January 12, with a launch ceremony in Convocation Hall. Throughout the year, the University of Saskatchewan would play host to a series of events and celebrations. Perhaps the most notable was Congress 2007, Canada.s largest academic gathering. In May several thousand delegates from around the world came to campus to discuss, debate and study issues in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. This conference had previously been hosted by the University in 1959 and 1979. An alumni homecoming was also hosted in the fall.
The official birthday took place on April 3rd in the College of Agriculture atrium amongst speeches, balloons and cake. Greetings were given by Mayor Don Atchison and President MacKinnon paid homage to the vision of the University of Saskatchewan founders. The event also featured the official unveiling of the U of S stamp designed and produced by Canada Post to commemorate the anniversary. The stamp combined the U of S logo, centennial banner and an image of the College Building.
