2006: U of S Hosts Vanier Cup
Hosting the Vanier Cup, the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) football championship, was the highlight of the 2006 University of Saskatchewan sporting calendar. Awarded in September of 2003, it was to be the first-ever Vanier Cup held outside of Ontario. In 2005, the PotashCorp donated $5 million to cover the cost of upgrades to Griffiths Stadium including artificial turf and stadium lights. The U of S Sports Precinct was subsequently named PotashCorp Park. With funding and planning firmly in place, the pressure was on the football Huskies to make it to the big game. The road was less than smooth. The Huskies finished second behind the Manitoba Bisons in the regular season. After defeating the UBC Thunderbirds at Griffiths Stadium in the first playoff game, the Huskies went on the road and claimed victory first over Manitoba and then Ottawa. The Vanier Cup game was held on November 25. It was a bright but bitterly cold day for the sold-out crowd of almost 13,000 fans.
