Curator's note | Hundreds of male Doukhobor settlers worked as manual labourers or 'navvies' in railway construction to earn much needed income for their communities. This need to find paid work helps to explain an 1899 photograph of Doukhobor women hitched to a plough which became notorious for seeming to suggest that Doukhobor women were badly mistreated and exploited by their men folk. The women had in fact few other options for preparing their fields for spring seeding when most of the community's men and horses were otherwise employed by others. |
