Curator's note | Estevan is surrounded by deposits of lignite coal on three sides. These deposits were known and exploited from the earliest days of European settlement. Coal was in great demand for fuel in southeastern Saskatchewan which has few trees. Many small mines were opened in those early days. The work was hard, dirty and dangerous as cave-ins were common. In this photo one can see a pier used to support the mine roof, a pick used to chip coal off the rock surface, and a rake shovel used to load coal into carts for transportation to the surface. |
