Historical noteIn 1976 the Local History Department of the Saskatoon Public Library acquired the Leonard A. Hillyard Photographic Collection. He was one of the earliest photographers of Saskatoon, being active until his death in 1975 at the age of 84 years. He arrived in Saskatoon from England in 1907, and worked for photographers George Trott and Ralph Dill in those early years. He opened his own studio in 1912 which was closed during WW I. The period covered by this part of his collection is from the early 1930s to the 1960s.
Scope and contentRows of tipis in temporary First Nations village erected at Pion-Era at the Saskatoon Exhibition, July 1959. There is a cooking pit and tri-pod. There is a crowd of people behind a fence observing the Dakota people in the camp. The woman in the striped dress with her hands on hips is likely Pauline Royal of Whitecap Reserve at Moose Woods, while Jewel Littlecrow peeks out from behind a tipi on the left.
