1986: First female chancellor elected: Sylvia Fedoruk

In 1986 Sylvia Fedoruk was elected as Chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan. Succeeding Emmett Hall, she became the eighth chancellor and the first woman to fill the post. A medical physicist with an international reputation, at the time of her election Dr. Fedoruk was about to retire from the Saskatoon Cancer Clinic. A University of Saskatchewan graduate, she had joined the University staff in 1951, as part of the research team developing a Cobalt-60 cancer therapy unit. Dr. Fedoruk served as Chancellor until 1991. She was appointed as Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant-Governor in 1988, serving until 1994.
