1976: SED at the Saskatoon Airport
In May of 1976 SED Systems officially opened its new facilities near
the Saskatoon Airport. This marked a departure from the campus of the company
that had been formed in 1965. Growing
out of the Space Engineering Division of the Department of Physics, it had initially designed and built rocket
instrumentation for upper atmospheric testing, primarily for the National
Research Council (NRC). Diversification soon followed with designs for
aerospace and satellite systems related to the communications industry.
Although SED had become a self-funding unit through awarded contracts, industry
complaints of unfair competition prompted the establishment, in 1972, of a limited
liability company, owned by the University.
In 1977, Western Canada’s first research park, Innovation Place, was
created by an agreement between the Government of Saskatchewan and the
University of Saskatchewan. SED was to moved there in 1980. In 1985 it made its first public share
offering. Within a year, Fleet
Aerospace Corporation (of Ontario) had acquired controlling interest of the
company. 1
