Overview: (Action Program on Eating and Exercise)

Initially developed, under the leadership of ParticipACTION, in 1987. Continued to 1995

Target audience: elementary school children (grades 4-6) in Ontario. Subsequently adopted by other provinces (Saskatchewan, Alberta)

Funded by Ontario Milk Marketing Board with support from Ontario Government (Sport and Fitness Unit)

Content developed by Ontario Physical and Health Education Association (OPHEA), ParticipACTION, plus health professionals and fitness experts

Classroom tested at each stage of development in cooperation with the Toronto Board of Education.

OBJECTIVES

  • To teach students how to analyze their personal daily food and physical activity patterns in a non-competitive environment
  • To enable students to set realistic goals for improving these habits
  • To have students take measures to implement those goals over a short term period

RESOURCES

  • Teachers Guide – includes 11 core lesson plans, auxiliary lesson plans and teaching ideas, background information, and ideas for integrating this information into other subject areas
  • Student Journal – one for each student, in a fun-filled, interactive and attractive magazine format for record-keeping, record analysis, goal-setting and goal-recording, complete with student-friendly information and instructions
  • Student Pre- and Post-tests – to measure the effectiveness of the program
  • Classroom Poster – highlighting the importance of healthy eating and regular activity
  • Stickers – for teachers to “reward” students for success
  • Two Home Newsletters – the first to inform parents about the program and gain their support; the second a reinforcement and designed as a home fridge poster (a constant reminder)

IMPLEMENTATION

The aim was to make this program – set out in 30 minute segments and designed to be taught over a 2 to 4 week period (depending on the time available) – as simple as possible for the busy classroom teacher to implement. All resources were supplied. “Just add milk” and it will work!
