Archives Week 2009
The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed the fourth annual Archives Week in Saskatchewan, to be celebrated February 2-8, 2009.

Province-wide

  • Monday, February 2
    • Radio phone-in program about archives, with SCAA Executive members Crista L. Bradley (University of Regina Archives) and Jeff O'Brien (City of Saskatoon Archives).  CBC Radio Saskatchewan,  1:00 p.m. If you missed it, you can listen online (Real Audio file). 

Humboldt

  • Tuesday, February 3 to Saturday, February 7
    • The Archives of the Humboldt Museum (corner of Main Street and Sixth Avenue) has recently acquired some fascinating documents that reflect the community's history - legal documents dating back as early as 1914 that were stored at city hall for many years. The first chance to view these documents will be during Archives Week - February 3 to 7. 
  • Thursday, February 5
    • Another special feature of Archives Week will be a selection of photographs taken by the Humboldt Journal. The staff at the Archives of the Humboldt Museum is asking local residents to help identify the people and events in these photographs.  The public is invited to attend the Saskatchewan Archives Week Open House on Thursday February 5, from 1:30 - 4:00 p.m.

La Ronge

  • Wednesday, February 4
    • "Do You Know These People?" The Northern Saskatchewan Archives invites you to come and help us with information on many old photos of La Ronge and Stanley Mission at our come-and-go Archives Week Open House. There will also be tours of the Archives, slide shows, storytelling and refreshments. Pahkisimon Nuye?áh Library building (wheelchair accessible), 108 Avro Place, Air Ronge, 1:00-5:00 p.m. For more information, please call Graham Guest at 425-6646.
North Battleford
  • The City of North Battleford Historic Archives will be taking a travelling exhibit - of photographs and more - to North Battleford's malls. Members of the Archives' volunteer committee will be on hand to answer questions, and information about current collections and ways to donate to the Archives will be available. The schedule is:
    • Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 1:00-5:00 p.m. - COOP Territorial Mall
    • Tuesday, Thursday, 1:00-5:00 p.m. - Frontier Mall

Prince Albert

  • Wednesday, February 4 to Saturday, February 7
    • The Bill Smiley Archives (Prince Albert Historical Society) is holding an open house every day between Wednesday and Saturday, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Come look at Henderson's directories to research the history of your house, find ancestors and old friends. There will also be an extensive exhibit showcasing the history of Prince Albert in photographs, an old-fashioned stereoscope with pictures of Prince Albert, a selection of historic maps, and a selection of high school yearbooks. At the Bill Smiley Archives, Prince Albert Historical Society, 10 River Street East.

Regina

  • Tuesday, February 3
    • Spotlight on the Past: Celebrity Readings from Archives in Saskatchewan. An evening of readings both foundational and frivolous, with: Angel Blair, Annette Campagne, Will Chabun, Jeff "Redbeard" Corbett, Ken Mitchell, Jacqui Shumiatcher, and Vianne Timmons. Regina Public Library Film Theatre, 2311 12th Ave., 7:00 p.m. Co-sponsored by the Regina Public Library
  • Wednesday, February 4
    • "Out of the Shadows: A New Look at Archives" - Well-known archival educator Dr. Thomas Nesmith, Head of the Master's Program in Archival Studies, University of Manitoba (and a member of the Board of Saskatchewan's provincial archives) will speak about the nature and value of records and archives. RIC 119, Research and Innovation Centre (between the Lab Building and College West), University of Regina, 4:00 p.m. (reception to follow)
  • Friday, February 6
    • A Night in Paradise. An evening of education and entertainment featuring short films from archives in Saskatchewan, with commentary by historian Jim Pitsula, at Regina's Paradise Cinemas. See Canora in the 1940s, enjoy "Fight Tuberculosis," one of Saskatchewan's earliest "talkies," witness World War II through the eyes of a Regina woman, and see a locally-produced film about Louis Riel. Paradise Cinemas, 1011 Devonshire Drive, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Presented in partnership with Paradise Cinemas

    • City of Regina Archives - Photographic exhibit about Wascana Park. At City Hall, 2476 Victoria Avenue
Saskatoon
  • Tuesday, February  3
    • Spotlight on the Past: Celebrity Readings from Archives in Saskatchewan. An evening of readings both foundational and frivolous, with: David Carpenter, John Cross, Pamela Haig Bartley, Ruth Horlick, Tom O'Hara, and Nettie Wiebe. Frances Morrison Library, 311 23rd St. E. (Theatre), 7:30 p.m. Presented in partnership with the Saskatoon Public Library. 
  • Starting Tuesday, February 3
    • At the Movies. An exhibit presented by the Saskatoon Public Library Local History Room revisiting the city's old movie theatres and drive-ins. Photographic memories of theatres such as the Capitol, Daylight, Tivolo and Victoria remind us of an era that has almost completely vanished. Frances Morrison Library Gallery, Second Level, 311 23rd St. E. Exhibit runs February 3-26; opening reception Wednesday, February 11, 7:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, February 5
    • Night at the Roxy. An evening of education and entertainment featuring several short films taken from the holdings of archives in Saskatchewan, with commentary provided by author and historian Bill Waiser. Follow a British film crew in 1957 as they travel from Regina to the new boom-town of Uranium City, or learn about cream grading in 1923 with "Mr. Sweet Cream" and "Mr. Lumpy Sour". Also included will be rare footage of the building of the Broadway Bridge in the 1930s, a locally-produced film about Louis Riel, and more. At Saskatoon's historic Roxy Theatre, 320 20th St. E., 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, February 8
    • Archives Pavilion at the Saskatoon Heritage Festival. One-stop shopping for answers to all your questions about archives and archival research in Saskatchewan. This is your chance to ask about: what archives are; donating records to an archives; your heritage fair project; your family history; your community's history; and more! Staff from the City of Saskatoon Archives, Saskatchewan Archives Board, Saskatoon Public Library Local History Room, University of Saskatchewan Archives, and the Saskatchewan Council for Archives and Archivists will be on hand. Archival films, dating from as early as 1919, will also be playing continuously. Western Development Museum, 2610 Lorne Ave. S., 12:00 noon-5:00 p.m

Shaunavon
  • Wednesday, February 4
    • Public reading of local stories from the Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre "Virtual Volunteers" project - Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre, 440 Centre Street, 7:00 p.m.
Swift Current
  • The Swift Current Museum will be mounting an exhibit of letters, photographs and more, showcasing the museum's archival holdings. At Swift Current City Hall.
Yorkton
  • The City of Yorkton Archives will be presenting a photographic exhibit at Yorkton City Hall.

Back by popular demand, "Celebrate Archives" buttons, produced especially for our first Archives Week, will be distributed at archives across the province. Bookmarks and postcards will also be available.

What's New

2013 Annual General Meeting
SCAA's 2013 Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on the afternoon of Friday June 21st at the Moose Jaw Public Library, located at 461 Langdon Crescent, Moose Jaw.
Registration for the AGM will be at 2:15 and the meeting will start at 2:30.
Lunch will be on your own, however table will be reserved at the Yvette Moore Gallery Cafe.
 
SCAA 2013 workshops

Digitizing Saskatchewan - The SCAA encourages you to take advantage of a half day version of this workshop to be held prior to the 2013 AGM in Moose Jaw on June 21st from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm.   THERE WILL BE AN HOUR SCHEDULED FOR LUNCH Please register here before June 17th


"Basic Archive workshop" A Rosetown session is being re-scheduled for the summer and a North Battleford session will be held on September 9.
