On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, the Honourable Bill Hutchinson, Minister of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport, has proclaimed February 6 to 12, 2011 as Archives Week in the province.  Click  here  to view the proclamation. 

Archives Week is an annual event showcasing the role that archives and archivists play in preserving and making available Saskatchewan's documentary heritage. Activities in communities across the province include celebrity reading events, film nights, open houses, exhibits and more.

Cut Knife Events

Monday, February 7th

Archives of the Clayton McLain Memorial Museum Open House

Archives of Clayton McLain Memorial Museum is hosting an open house, from 1:00 to 4:00pm at the Museum Administration and Archives Center on Railway Avenue in Cut Knife.  There will be several displays, which will include newspaper articles with references to families and organizations from the Cut Knife area. These are collected and organized each year. As well there will be information about "What are archives?" and the Museum Administration and Archives Center will be talking about future plans. Refreshments will be served.

Archives of the Humboldt & District Museum & Gallery Open House

Join the Archives of the Humboldt & District Museum & Gallery in celebrating Saskatchewan Archives Week by viewing a great new selection of archival photographs recently donated by Alice Ramsay. These photographs were taken by Alice’s brother, Ed Suchan who operated Modern Photo Studio in Humboldt. We invite you to view these photographs and assist us in identifying the people and events.

The photographs will be the feature display at our Archives Open House on Tuesday, February 8 from 1:30 - 4:00 pm and throughout Archives Week. Please stop in for free coffee and goodies - proudly sponsored by the Sask. Council of Archives and Archivists.

Pahkisimon Nuye?áh Library System (Northern Saskatchewan Archives) Open House

On display will be photographs from two collections in the Archives, most of which have never been publicly displayed before:

The 4H Program in Northern Saskatchewan, 1951-1969
A fascinating collection of images from the early days of slide photography taken by Don Neilson showing students in 12 northern communities in their gardens and on Achievement Days with their crafts and garden produce.  

Portraits of Northern Air Cadets in #590 Squadron RCAC, 1961-1967
Portraits of cadets from several northern communities who were members of #590 Squadron RCAC while attending school in Prince Albert during the years 1961 to 1967.

The open house will be on Tuesday, February 8 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at the Northern Saskatchewan Archives is in the Pahkisimon Nuye?áh Library System building on the corner of Cessna Street and Avro Place in Air Ronge. Refreshments will be served and the displays are wheelchair accessible.

Tribute to the King 

Concert by Rory Allen. Concert starts at 7:30pm at the Vic Juba Community Theatre located at Lakeland College, 2602 59 Avenue, Lloydminster. Proceeds of this concert will be donated to the Lloydminster Regional Archives.

New Show!  New brass section added to the already terrific band!  Headline entertainer and Elvis Presley tribute artist, Rory Allen, captivates audiences with his powerful vocals and stunning costumes.

Melfort and District Museum - Coffee & Conversation: "Doctors"

Join the Melfort and District Museum from 3:00 - 4:00pm for an informal talk about the history of Medicine and the doctors of Melfort.

City of North Battleford Historic Archives will have displays that include approximately 70 photos regarding Railway Transportation and other modes of transportation from the early 1900 – 1980 and have created two power point presentations that will be displayed at the local malls.  The displays can be seen:

Public Lecture, 'Art and Music at the University of Regina:  The Centennial Legacy'

James Pitsula, professor of History, will deliver a public lecture, 'Art and Music at the University of Regina: The Centennial Legacy' on Thursday February 10th at 2:30 PM at Archives and Special Collections in the Dr. John Archer Library. Reception to follow.

Also following the lecture, Archives and Special Collections will launch websites for two recently completed digitization projects. These highlight the history of Regina College (a precursor to the University of Regina) and Florence Kirk, a Regina College alumnus whose letters home tell the fascinating story of her life in China from 1932 to 1950.

Materials highlighting both Regina College and Florence Kirk will be on display throughout the week.

Silence is Golden: Buster Keaton’s “The General”

The second annual "Silence Is Golden" film festival at the historic Roxy Theatre features the 1926 silent classic "The General" on the big screen accompanied by the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra playing the original score.   Presented by the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra and the Riversdale BID.  Friday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, February 12 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Tickets $30 (evening) and $20 (matinee).
